Scrapbooking is a hobby that has been gaining popularity in recent years. It involves designing a scrapbook that holds artwork, photographs and memorabilia. Even though a photo album is ideal for storing photos, a scrapbook’s main goal is to capture a particular moment and to preserve memories.
What someone will see in a photo album are photos that have been placed in randomly or in chronological order; however in a scrapbook, they will see the pages are themed. For instance, when a scrapbooker creates a Halloween-themed scrapbook then they will choose an appropriate piece of paper that will be utilized as the background where the photos will be placed on. Next, they will include an invitation card onto the page with a feather from a costume. Furthermore, important details and thoughts will be included about the party or event on that page as well.
How to start scrapbooking
To start with you will need to have glue, photographs, scissors and paper. Although there are many scrapbooking materials that you can buy including cut-outs, stickers, stencils, pens, etc. you don’t need to buy all of that to make an attractive scrapbook.
Start by gathering all of the photographs and memorabilia you want to preserve. Things you may want to include are invitations, pressed flowers, locks of hair, newspaper clippings, jewelry, ticket stubs and other such items.
It may be best not to stick some items on the paper directly but to put them in transparent envelopes and then paste the envelopes on the page. Additionally you could tie them on to your scrapbook by punching a hole through the page to then use the string to connect it to the page.
However, you may find that there are certain things that aren’t small enough to place on your scrapbook simply because it’s too big. For instance, if your best friend protected your life by employing a stun gun, and you want to remember this memory, you won’t be able of putting the stun gun in your scrapbook. Instead, why not just take a photo of it and then use the picture you have.
Once you have a lot of items, sort them by date and theme like 25th birthday, cruise trip, Christmas 2001, etc. then create your own pages by placing the pictures and memorabilia on paper. Label the photographs and write down some details about the memories that you want to preserve.
Tips to scrapbooking
Most families have some very old photographs like black and white photos of their grandparents. These are one of a kind and should never be used on scrapbooks! Have then scanned at a photo shore or scan them yourself and print them out. Use the copies on your scrapbook project and keep the original photos in a safe place using acid-free holders.
You can do the same thing (scanning then printing) for memorabilia that you don’t want to cut out or are too big. For instance, you may not want to cut out photos from your school yearbook, so instead why not consider scanning the pages you want and then printing out the photos to use.
Digital scrapbooks
Now, if you already have a lot of digital photographs, you can also consider digital scrapbooks. Nowadays there are a lot of scrapbook design programs like Smilebox.
It’s much less expensive to make digital scrapbooks and it is a lot of fun. Not only that, but you can also share digital scrapbooks, via Facebook posts, web pages and email. This is ideal for people who want to show their designs to friends and family. In addition, digital scrapbooks can include other media like songs and videos.
If you do want a hard copy of your scrapbook, you can easily have it printed as many times as you want.
